WTN- The Japanese had no written language when they first came under China’s influence and they readily adopted the Chinese script. Japanese scribes and scholars spent years mastering its complexities by studying and copying Chinese texts.
In the ninth century , however a much simpler phonetic Japanese script called kana was introduced. It could be acquired without lengthy schooling and was learned by women as well as men . used first for private diaries or love notes. Kana soon became the preferred language for Japanese poetry and prose.
Two remarkable works written by woman around A.D. 1000 –The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu and the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon –Represent the starting point for Japanese fiction .the authors’ used their own language to describe the society they lived in. their artistic efforts helped create a new literary form in the Japanese language the novel
