Air traffic seeing a boom

Saturday - September 22, 2018 4:02 pm , Category : TRAVEL

WTN- Indore is emerging as the busiest and the most important airport of central India.  Over the last 3-4 years, Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport in Indore has seen a major spurt in the number of aircraft and passenger movements, piping many important cities.

In the 2017-18 financial year, Indore registered the movement of 2.2 million passengers. It showed a 27 per cent jump in passenger traffic, making it the 13th biggest gainer among major 50 airports of the country. Close to 11,000 tonnes of cargo shipments were handled by the airport in 2017-18, making it the 14th most important transshipment hub of the country.

In cargo movement it shows a whopping 41 per cent jump from last year, taking it among the top five gainers. In all parameters, Indore is way ahead of its rival cities in the region like Nagpur, Vadodara, Bhopal, Raipur, Nashik, Gwalior or Aurangabad. Not only this, there are several airlines waiting in the wings for slot and approval to fly to Indore.

The airport is shortly going in for a major expansion and overhaul to accommodate more passengers and aircraft movements. For passenger convenience shopping, recreation, dining, and star hotel facilities are coming up. More space for parking and more hangers for aircraft for night landing and parking etc have been envisaged and the government is going all out to finish the mega project in time. International flights to Dubai and Singapore are likely to start shortly and there is no dearth of fliers to these destinations.

Indore’s growing image as an ultimate business destination and MP’s fame for being a tourist’s paradise have added to the importance of the city and its communication infrastructure. In all likelihood, Indore will break into the top 15 busiest airports of the country by the next year-end. Several new destinations from Indore have been added in the flying itinerary over the last two years. Indore has also gained from the general boom in the airline sector the country as a whole is seeing.

Several Tier II and Tier III cities have seen exponential growth in the number of fliers in last few years. With competition growing and fares coming down, today flying is no longer a luxury of the rich. A large section of the middle class today flies, to save precious time and also enjoy the unique experience. Delhi and Mumbai airports are already chocking, with 500-600 daily aircraft movements, making them among the busiest in Asia. A new airport in Mumbai is on the cards and also one in Noida to lessen the pressure on IGI.  Kolkata and Chennai airports too are handing 300-400 aircraft daily and the figures are set to grow in coming years.

If Indore has seen unprecedented growth in the flying sector, other airports too are not sitting ducks.  Raipur and Nagpur have registered healthy growth to the tune to 15-16 per cent year-on-year, while Bhopal has also seen a decent rise of about 7 per cent in passenger traffic. We can safely say that air traffic in India is still far from its optimum potential and in the years to come we are going to witness a revolutionary change in our skies with the sheer number of passengers flying.
